Protect your kids from common summer conditions

Summer is synonymous with carefree days and endless outdoor play for families with young children. However, it’s also a time when certain ailments thrive in the scorching heat. Makati Medical Center’s Department of Pediatrics offers insights into preventing these common summer conditions from dampening your fun.

Skin Woes

Prolonged exposure to the sun can lead to prickly heat or bungang araw, causing discomfort for kids. Dr. Angelica Cecilia Tomas suggests applying calamine lotion or talcum powder to alleviate itching and opting for loose, light-colored clothing to keep them cool. Limit outdoor play during peak sun hours (10 am to 4 pm) and ensure hydration with plenty of water.

Food and Water Safety

Warmer temperatures increase the risk of food poisoning due to bacterial growth in hot weather. Dr. Tomas advises thorough handwashing, proper food storage, and immediate consumption of cooked food to prevent contamination. Symptoms such as upset stomach, vomiting, and diarrhea should prompt immediate fluid intake to prevent dehydration.

Measles Alert: Measles cases peak during summer months, posing a significant threat to unvaccinated children. Dr. Tomas emphasizes the importance of timely vaccinations, administered at 9 months, 12-15 months, and 4-6 years, to safeguard against this highly contagious viral disease.

Eye Irritations

Conjunctivitis, or sore eyes, spreads through contact with infected surfaces or poorly chlorinated water. To prevent transmission, Dr. Tomas recommends regular handwashing and avoidance of eye rubbing. While viral conjunctivitis typically resolves within a week, bacterial cases require prompt medical attention to prevent vision complications.
