Preparing Your Toddler for a New Sibling

A new addition to the family can bring happiness as well as many challenges. Once you pop up the good news about the pregnancy, you only have a few months to prepare your little one for the arrival of the new family member. Momi Berlin shares with you ways to ready your toddler for his baby sibling.

Preparing Your Toddler for a New Sibling

Gently introduce the idea of a new brother/sister

Begin by talking to your tot about his new sibling. This way, you are setting his mind on the baby that’s on the way. You may show him your growing tummy and tell him it is where his sibling develops. You can also tell your little one that he came from the same belly; thus, they are called siblings.

Setting your child’s expectation on the new family member

Experts say that children younger than two years old are too young to grasp about the pregnancy and the unborn sibling compared to those two- to three-year-olds.

You can tell your toddler that though he may not be able to play with the baby right away, he can kiss mommy’s tummy anytime. This way, your toddler will know that newborns need extra care. If you have anyone you know who have infants, visit them. This way, your child can have a feel of what it is like to have a baby at home.

Additionally, you can also show him photos of his birth and his first few days of life. This way, he will be more ready for the newest family member.

Getting your toddler involved

When your older kid is not getting enough attention that he needs when the baby is home, this may result in jealousy. Get him involved by asking for his help with bathing, changing diapers, and singing lullabies to the newborn baby. Do not forget to appreciate him for doing an excellent job in helping you out with the baby.

When shopping for Huggies at Shopee, for instance, get your little one involved, too. As you shop, explain to him that there is a Rainy Diaper Deals on Huggies Brand Day on 31 July and that means you will have significant savings. That way, he will also feel your excitement with the 28% off and free shipping. You may also teach him how to download the Shopee app for free from the App Store or Google Play.

Preventing sibling rivalry

Sibling rivalry happens when your older child feels like you are giving him less attention. Make sure you and your husband still have one-on-one time with him. You can do it when the baby is fast asleep. Ask him what he feels about his new sibling and listen to what he has to say. Assure him that your love for him has never changed, even with the arrival of the new child.

And how about letting him feel extra special as you browse through Shopee and let him choose a toy he would want to have? Surely, he would feel he is very much appreciated, too, and cared for.

Having an addition to the family is both a blessing and a challenging task that you have to go through. It will not be easy for everyone at home, yet with proper guidance, your older kiddo will slowly be able to understand the situation. Maybe in a few years, they will be best friends ready to defend and fight for each other.
