Visual storytelling
Four visual storytellers travel across Southeast Asia to share their passions and stories using the latest Xiaomi 12 Series. They passionately and creatively captured the people, life, and culture in Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand. Produced by National Geographic Creative Works for Xiaomi, the campaign ‘Proactive Action’ documents and raises awareness of causes that are close to the hearts of the storytellers. It aims to create interest in these countries told through the eyes of celebrated photographers. Those who took part in the campaign are Annice Lyn from Malaysia, Gab Mejia from the Philippines, Linh Pham from Vietnam, and Sirachai “Shin” Arunrugstichai from Thailand.
KM Leong shares his excitement as they collaborate with National Geographic Creative Works. In a statement, he shares that through the campaign, they are able to celebrate Southeast Asia’s people, lives, and cultures. And what better way to capture the visual stories of each explorer than through the lens of Xiaomi’s premium flagship phone, the Xiaomi 12 Pro. The phone boasts of its pro-grade triple 50MP camera array, complemented by Xiaomi’s advanced AI algorithm. KM Leong, by the way, is the General Manager for Southeast Asia of Xiaomi International.
Proactive Action features a series of short videos and photos to highlight the different themes chosen by each explorer, where the Xiaomi 12 Pro is put to the test with its triple 50MP pro-grade camera lenses, highlighting especially new features such as Ultra Night Video and ProFocus. In addition, the campaign encompasses many social, cultural, and environmental themes close to each explorer’s heart.
Gab Mejia (Philippines)
Gab undertakes a journey to make known the cultural and natural aspects of the Mountain People of the Cordilleras. The Cordilleras is the highest mountain range in the Northern Philippines. Gab highlights the importance and theme of natural and cultural heritage preservation.
Annice Lyn (Malaysia)
Annice embarks on the work of the Wayang Kulit master, traditionally known as puppet shadow-play. Annice creatively captures behind-the-scenes moments of the tradition as well as the craftsmanship of making various puppets. Of course, she includes several performances, too, to raise awareness of the art form while preserving it for the future generations to come.
Sirachai “Shin” Arunrugstichai (Thailand)
Shin explores one of the most extensive remaining mangrove forests of eastern Thailand at Prasae Estuary. Shins captures the Capturing the successful results of the conservation efforts that prevent the degradation of this natural wonder. Beautifully told through the lenses, too, is the captivating storytelling of the forests’ path to recovery. Shin portrays the rich biodiversity of the place while also showing the intertwining relationships between the rich natural resources and its local community.
Linh Pham (Vietnam)
Linh allows us to know more about Ho Chi Minh City’s cultural riches through its hidden corners not commonly found in travel guides. Through his senses and keen eye to look beyond the mundane, Linh ventures through a museum with million-year-old specimens and an unnamed coffee shop under the bridge. He also has shots of a charming neighborhood blended with Vietnamese and Chinese heritage and a peaceful fishing island. All these shots and videos convey the hope of preserving the city’s legacy and sharing it with the world.
Celebrating life and culture in SEA
As part of the campaign, Xiaomi holds a photography contest Xiaomi Photography Academy: A Celebration of People, Life, and Culture across Southeast Asia. The contest is for those who want to showcase their talent and share the fascinating parts of their lives and culture. The photo contest, which runs from May 14 until June 14, 2022, is open to individuals who own a Xiaomi or Redmi phone. For a sure win, participants need to take the best photos that represent the theme.
For the Grand Prize Winner, a Xiaomi Smart Package (Mi TV P1 55″, Mi Soundbar, Xiaomi Watch S1, Mi Standing Fan 2) is up for grabs. The winner will also be named Xiaomi Photography Ambassador. In addition, there will be four consolation prize winners who will take home Xiaomi Buds 3.

Learning to Master Every Scene from the Masters
Want to learn from the masters? Photography enthusiasts can join and get hands-on experience during the Xiaomi Photography Academy Masterclass at the Masungi Georeserve on May 14, 2022.
The free-to-enter masterclass is open for all Xiaomi 12 Series users. Participants may also get a chance to meet and learn from National Geographic Photographer Gab Mejia using the Xiaomi 12 Pro to take scenic photographs. Attendees may also stand a chance to win a Xiaomi Mi-stery Box after the program.
