BDO’s Tips for Avoiding Scams
In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to panic and fall victim to scams. BDO Unibank is here to help you stay calm and vigilant. Scammers often send fake text or email messages that spread false information. They also aim to incite panic and prompt hasty actions, like clicking on suspicious links.
Recognize the Signs of a Scam
These fraudulent messages may come from unknown 11-digit numbers or email addresses. Sometimes they even appear to be from legitimate sources using a technique called “spoofing.” If you receive a message claiming a login attempt on your online bank account from an unfamiliar device, urging you to “remove” the device, be cautious—it’s likely a scam.
Another common scam involves a text message claiming your online bank account will be deactivated unless you update your mobile number by clicking a link. A similar scam claims your email address has been updated. Then they provide a link to “change back” to the previous email address.
BDO’s Advice for Staying Safe
BDO reminds us, “If the message or sender urges you to click a link or scan a QR code, it’s a scam.” Always delete such messages immediately and report them to the Bank through these channels: 22567888 (SMS) or reportphish@bdo.com.ph.
Scammers often prey on potential victims by sending messages that claim their online bank account has been compromised or that there was an unauthorized login attempt. These unverified messages can cause recipients to panic and follow the instructions, such as clicking on a link that leads to a fake bank website. On these fake websites, victims may unknowingly enter their bank account details, like usernames and passwords, which scammers then use to access and steal money from their accounts.
Stay Calm and Verify
To avoid falling victim to these scams, BDO advises clients to remain calm. Never click on any links in suspicious messages, and never share their One-Time PIN (OTP) with anyone. Instead, contact BDO’s customer service directly to verify the message’s legitimacy.
Stay safe, moms! Always verify before you act.
