And Here’s What You Can Do About It
When we think of middle-age diseases like hypertension, obesity, and diabetes, we usually picture older generations. But recently, doctors at Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed) have noticed a concerning rise in these health problems among millennials—those born between 1981 and 1996.
According to the Department of Health (DOH), 36% of Filipinos over 20 years old are obese, 40% are inactive, and there’s been an alarming increase in younger people developing breast and colorectal cancer. Mental health issues, including burnout and suicide attempts, are also growing at an alarming rate.
Why is this happening? Dr. Juan Armando D. Diaz, a cardiologist at MakatiMed, attributes this trend to a combination of factors, like stress from work and finances, unhealthy coping mechanisms (like smoking and drinking), and technology overuse. With more screen time, millennials are sacrificing sleep, physical activity, and time outdoors—all essential to maintaining good health.
But all hope is not lost. Dr. Diaz stresses that it’s never too late (or too early) to take control of your health. He offers some simple tips that can help millennials—and anyone, really—stay healthy:
Get moving
Aim for 15-30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise three to five times a week. Walking is an easy way to start, and tech-savvy millennials can use apps or smartwatches to track their progress.
Eat balanced meals
Incorporate more fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins (like fish and chicken) into your diet. Limit processed foods and junk food, and try to eliminate alcohol. Staying hydrated is key—invest in a reusable water bottle!
Prioritize sleep
Getting 7-9 hours of sleep is essential for your health. Avoid stimulating activities like screen time before bed and opt for something relaxing, like reading or listening to calming music.
Connect with others
Social media can’t replace the benefits of real-life relationships. Spending time with loved ones lifts your mood and supports mental health.
By making small but consistent changes in your lifestyle, you can improve your health and enjoy many more years of vitality and happiness. For personalized advice, it’s always a good idea to consult with a doctor.
