Take Care of your hEART
As moms, we always put our family first—making sure our kids eat right, get enough sleep, and stay healthy. But when was the last time you checked on your own heart health?

We often focus on things like pregnancy, breastfeeding, or even skincare, but heart health isn’t always top of mind. The truth is, heart disease is one of the leading causes of death among women, and as we age, our risk increases. Hormonal changes, pregnancy complications, and the daily stresses of motherhood all play a role.
According to Dr. Jasmin Melissa B. Bernardo from Makati Medical Center, estrogen plays a protective role in heart health, helping to keep blood pressure stable and cholesterol levels in check. But as we enter perimenopause or experience pregnancy complications like gestational diabetes or preeclampsia, our risk for heart issues can rise.
So, what can we do? Here are four heart-friendly habits every mom should practice:
1. Know Your Numbers
Many Filipinas don’t realize they have high blood pressure until they experience complications like a stroke. Don’t wait for a health scare—monitor your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and weight regularly. If you haven’t had a check-up in a while, schedule one now!
2. Listen to Your Body
Did you know that heart attack symptoms in women can look different than in men? While chest pain is common, women may also experience:
✔ Jaw or back pain
✔ Nausea or vomiting
✔ Weakness in the arms
✔ Flu-like symptoms
If something feels off, don’t ignore it. Check your blood pressure and heart rate, and when in doubt, seek medical help immediately.
3. Eat Better, Move More
Between managing the household, work, and taking care of the kids, healthy eating and exercise often take a backseat. But small changes can make a big difference!
Choose heart-healthy meals – More veggies, lean protein, and whole grains.
Move when you can – Aim for 7,000 to 10,000 steps daily. No time for the gym? Take the stairs, park farther away, dance while cleaning, or do quick exercises like squats and stretches at home
4. Manage Stress—You Deserve It!
Moms are superheroes, but even superheroes need a break! Chronic stress can take a toll on your heart. Take time for yourself:
✔ Schedule a self-care day
✔ Try meditation or deep breathing
✔ Get enough sleep
✔ Spend time with friends
✔ Don’t feel guilty about taking a day off!
Remember, being a mom means taking care of yourself so you can take care of your family. Simple lifestyle changes can keep your heart strong for years to come.
