Empower midwives and expand access to reproductive health
I walked into the Midwives Summit 2025 with a sense of quiet anticipation, not just as an observer but as someone who deeply believes in the power of stories that shape communities. Hosted by the Integrated Midwives Association of the Philippines (IMAP) with the support of Organon Philippines, the event brought together midwives, government leaders, and advocates under a shared vision: to empower midwives and expand access to reproductive health in the era of Universal Health Care (UHC).

From the very start, there was an unmistakable energy in the room. One of compassion, competence, and commitment. Patricia Gomez, Executive Director of IMAP, opened the summit with words that resonated deeply: “This Summit is for every midwife who continues to serve women, families, and communities with compassion, competence, and dedication.” It set the tone for what the day would be, not just a conference but a celebration of purpose.
The powerful role of midwives
The theme, “Empowering Midwives, Expanding Access: Advancing Reproductive Health in the UHC Era,” reminded me of how midwives are often the first and most trusted point of contact in healthcare, especially in rural and underserved areas. The discussions placed a strong focus on family planning as a cornerstone of community well-being. It was powerful to hear how midwives continue to guide women in making informed decisions about their reproductive health.
As the sessions unfolded, I saw how midwives’ roles are evolving. Conversations on contraceptive counseling and long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) weren’t just about methods; they were about empowerment. These women are not only healthcare providers; they are advocates, educators, and protectors of dignity.
Meaningful partnership that drives impact
One of the strongest messages I took away was the emphasis on collaboration between midwives, the government, NGOs, and private partners. Representatives from Organon Philippines shared how meaningful partnerships drive impact, echoing the words of Carole Lopez, Organon’s External Affairs and Communications Lead, “Meaningful impact is only possible when government, healthcare professionals, and the private sector work together.”
Throughout the day, it became clear that midwives are the quiet heroes of our healthcare system. They are there in far-flung areas, in the middle of the night, in times of crisis. They are the ones bridging the gap between policy and people, between healthcare and humanity.
Midwives don’t just deliver babies; they deliver hope

The Summit also offered practical insights from updates on national family planning policies to sustaining midwifery programs through shared innovations. But beyond the presentations and data, it was the personal stories that lingered. Stories of service, of resilience, and of a shared dream: that every woman, wherever she may be, deserves access to quality reproductive and maternal care.
As the day closed, I realized that the Midwives Summit 2025 wasn’t just about advancing a profession; it was about uplifting lives. It shone a spotlight on midwives not only as service providers but as lifelines in the journey toward better health outcomes for every Filipino family.
I left the summit inspired with a deeper appreciation for the quiet strength behind every safe birth, every counseled mother, and every cared-for community. Midwives don’t just deliver babies. They deliver hope.
