Lesson from Aesop’s Fable’s The Bee-Keeper

The Story of the Beverly Hills Brat

We read the story of the bee-keeper. Then I remember the video I saw about a spoiled 15-year-old girl who turned to Dr. Phil for help. Dr. Phil is an American talk show created by Oprah Winfrey and the host Phil McGraw. The show tackles compelling stories about real people dealing with problems on child abuse, depression, domestic violence, racism, substance abuse, and other issues prevalent in today’s society.

The young lass went to Dr. Phil to “get straight with her mum.” Her mother cut her allowance from $US5000 (PHP 250,000) a month to $US1000 (PHP 50,000), and she can’t live with only $US1000 a month. She also demanded that she “needs” a brand new Mercedes-Benz G class sports car for her 16th birthday. The car is about $US2M (PHP 100,000,000).

The Beverly Hills brat said that she grew up on a certain lifestyle and her parent just can’t take that away from her that abruptly.

The talk show host and psychologist Dr. Phil advised the mother to give more love and less cash to the daughter. And for the daughter, the host told the young lady to get a job in the real world. This prompted the lass to cry, claiming more love is just too late. Further, getting a job is “too much hard work.”

The Lesson from the Two Stories

The teen’s reaction to the decision of her parent is just too disturbing for us. We see an ungrateful brat who wants to get everything her way. But then, we don’t know their full story so we would want to give her the benefit of the doubt.

Both the story of the bee-keeper and the young lass show that sometimes, we hit back the people who care for us or at least show concern toward us. They may have done something we disapprove of but that doesn’t mean they deserve our angst or disrespect. Let us be grateful and respectful at all times.  Because collectively, no matter how small or big our act of gratitude and respect to all might be, we still help reshape the foundation of a more accepting and loving society.  We are still positive that time will come the world will be healed of hatred, jealousy, and angst. We just need to start it within our circle and it will eventually spread in all directions, cultures, and races.
