When I was a schoolgirl, we used to pass by Lilac Street in Marikina City. It’s just a few blocks away from our school and most of my service mates live within the area. The long stretch of the street is home to middle-class families, mostly awardees of government housing projects.
Years passed and the houses turned into commercial dining spaces, making Lilac Steet as one established food district. Little by little, volumes of restaurants started to sprout like mongo plants in other Marikina areas like Calumpang, San Roque, and Katipunan. And though the city is still known for shoes – thus earning the “Shoe Capital of the Philippines” title – Marikina City is slowly becoming famous as an ideal food destination, too. A lot of food crawls happened already in these areas and even if you’re inside SM Marikina, all the more that you can have an awesome gastronomic experience. Allow us to share our recent first-time food crawl stops.
Sunnies Cup Point
We just so love the concept of this coffee shop inspired by the retail spaces in Japan and Korea. Sunnies Cup Point is Sunnies Specs optical in-store cafe. This little hideaway nook serves more than one purpose. As you wait for your specs appointment, you can have your favorite drink and even indulge in some nice magazine reading.
At SM Marikina, the Sunnies Cup Point branch has a small lounge area which doubles as one’s desk space. You can either wait silently for your eyeglasses or you can share a few cups of drinks and chitchats with friends.
Unlike the famous coffeeshops offering almost all drink flavors and whatnot, Sunnies Cup Point only has a few choices. You can have Americano or Cappuccino, Espresso, Latte, Matcha, and Mocha. The coffee is sourced from Brazil and Costa Rica, often described as “robust yet with relaxing roast of cacao in orange hint taste.”
We had their signature honey drink and the nutty flavor of the cacao is very rich. Our LittleMan was with us that day so we had to stop him from having our cup of caffeine. Good thing Sunnies Cup Point has milkshakes, too, for those who prefer their drinks sweet, cold and with milk. From the three flavors – Matcha, Cookies, and Cereal – we love best the latter because of the cinnamon and frosted cereal twist flavor.

For first-timers like us, we think Samgyeopmasarap is a nice way to introduce to Samgyeopsal.
For the uninitiated, the right way to eat in a Korean restaurant- as demonstrated to us by our dear friends- is to do your wrap or ssam properly. Just place lettuce on your palm, add meat, ssamjang (thick, spicy paste), and some other side dishes you prefer. You can be creative as to what side dishes you include in your wrap.
Though our first time to try this restaurant, we may say we enjoyed having a Korean feast. We like how Samgyeopmasarap cut their meat. They are cut very thinly, making the flavor (marinated and in salt & pepper) come out easily. The meat is also juicy and crispy.
Samgyeopmasarap offers unlimeat of BBQ pork belly, BBQ beef, and Chicken BBQ for quite a reasonable amount. All three meat options come with a generous serving of lettuce, rice, and side dishes. You can also order ala carte such as Beef Rib Stew, Bibimbap, Bulgogi, Egg Roll, Japchae, and Pajeon.

I Love Bubble Waffle
You would surely say “I Love Bubble Waffle” after having these egg-shaped waffles in various fillings and flavors, toppings, and more. Each egg waffle is served quickly and beautifully in a cup, thus the tagline “a piece of happiness shared in a cup.” Unlike the usual grid pattern look of the waffle, I Love Bubble Waffle uses a special honeycomb mold. This results in soft, chewy bubble waffles with crispy edges.
Flavors vary from Classic to Blueberry, Coffee, Detox, Koko Krunch, Matcha, and Strawberry. We particularly love the premier flavors Ham & Cheese and Bacon S’mores. You can also be as creative and adventurous as you can as you have your waffles. You may opt to have your waffles with a scoop of ice cream, a dazzle of syrup, or a splash of toppings.
I love Bubble Waffle is on the ground level of SM Marikina near the Supermarket. You can have your waffles to go or have them at I Love Bubble Waffles’ station.
Roberto’s promises great-tasting steak experience in a casual restaurant setting. But from the outside, you could see the elegant and spacious setting perfect for intimate dates and family get-together.
The steak house offers 100% Australian beef and the menu ranges from steaks to grilled pork, chicken fillet, and grilled salmon. Each meat has side dishes from rice to mashed potato, grilled apple, and the likes. As for the taste, we love best the Grilled Chicken Fillet which is very tender and delish.
Despite the elegant restaurant set up and fancy meal presentation, dishes start at P260 only, making it one of the most affordable steak houses in town.

SM Marikina Food Crawl
We grew up in Marikina City. The city still has that rural feels and yes, you could still see and hear birds chirping in the morning. Now, I am seeing our city slowly embracing a lot of advancement. You will be dazzled by its multitude of offerings ranging from recreational centers, historical sites, and vibrant food and entertainment hubs. Various cafes, bars, and restaurants offering a wide variety of dishes to satisfy one’s cravings are aplenty. More than its shoes, Marikina City is also making a name in the food scene. And if you are quite overwhelmed by the number of diners within the area and do not know where to start, we suggest you don’t go any further and start with SM Marikina.
