I was in grade six then. I was walking in a nearby neighborhood when a man riding on a bike suddenly grabbed my breast. The 11-year-old me was stunned and wasn’t able to move for about a few seconds. When I looked back, there was the unruly guy, on his bicycle, smiling mischievously.
I didn’t walk alone in that village anymore. Nor did I return to that place ever again.
I felt a stranger sexually harassed me.
Violence Against Women
That incident made me more careful about the places I go to. I learned that three in five Filipinas had been sexually harassed in their lifetime. One out of four married Filipinas has experienced abuse from their partners. There is also online harassment that has victimized mostly women aged 15 to 35.
Violence continues to affect millions of women around the world. In the Philippines, harassment cases continue to rise alarmingly. Such kind of abuse isn’t limited to the physical type.
End Violence Against Women
Thus, it is comforting to know that there are companies like Avon Philippines that has long supported women’s causes. Just recently, Avon Philippines launched Stand4Her, a global plan which aims to improve the lives of 100 million women by advancing their earning potential, freedom of expression, and ability to live a safe and healthy life. Part of this global plan is the Promise to Help End Violence Against Women and Girls.
As part of the Promise to Help End Violence Against Women and Girls, Avon created a limited edition Free as a Butterfly jewelry set. This is to help fund the causes of partner NGOs that empower abused victims and survivors through guidance, inspiration, and support.
Join the Crusade Against Violence
The beautiful set is available starting March through an Avon representative or online. From the P299 per set amount, P50 from each sale goes to the partner organizations.
Aside from the limited edition jewelry set, the campaign also has famous showbiz personality Ruffa Gutierez and her daughters Lorin and Venice as celebrity ambassadors.
Ruffa and her daughters share their personal experiences and insights on catcalling, online harassment, and abusive relationships through a series of online videos. They also encourage women to stand up for each other, never tolerate any abuse, and join the crusade against violence. It is also the goal of the campaign to help shine a light on different forms of abuse through the personal narratives of Ruffa and her daughters.
