Saving money is perhaps our most common factor. We always look to make savings whether we need it or not. So much so that we’d do anything that helps us save. Though we love to make savings, we find it difficult and even sometimes, impossible to do. Perhaps because we prefer buying things we don’t need just out of habit.
If we are eager to save, a possible way to do so is controlling our habit of spending money. We may also need to carve our a saving instinct in us. Once we’ve got our spending in check, saving will start to come naturally. Here are some unique, but doable saving ideas that’ll help us make significant savings over time.
Balance out spending and savings
The cornerstone to accommodate savings into our monthly routine is to maintain a balance between spending and saving. Though it’s hard to control our monthly expenses, we may try not to spend every penny we earn each month. Make a table of monthly expenses and put the rest in a savings account or a personal piggy bank.
Instead of driving, walk
Sitting in the driver’s seat all the time is not a good idea. Take a stroll down the street and try to walk to nearby locations at least. The more we walk, the more we save money on fuel and vehicle maintenance. Though it may sound a little awkward, walking for half an hour each day can be quite beneficial in many ways. For heart patients, walking is perhaps the best exercise. It will improve our health and stamina and will turn our otherwise untidy routine into a healthy one.
Don’t buy an expensive smartphone contract
Everyone wants to have the best smartphone plan and for a good reason. After all, who wouldn’t want to have the fastest data connectivity and cheapest call and SMS packages? But, we have to pay a lot for it, which often becomes unaffordable. We can live without the fastest data connection on our smartphone, as we have the internet at home and office anyway. Same goes for calling, as a cheap call and SMS package will serve us well for the month. If you somehow ended up buying an expensive contract, return it at the end of the month and buy an affordable one. It will help you save a decent sum each month.
Be energy efficient
Known as the Vampire Power, it is the power that our appliances consume while turned off. Plugged-in electronic devices consume electricity even when turned off. Being energy conscious is not enough. It would help if we unplug those units like the desktop and charged in laptops (when charging), cable TV boxes, coffee maker, iron, toaster, microwave oven, and fans.
Make savings while buying
As the saying goes, “Small steps lead to success,” and it works in this case. Every time we go out to shop, we may try to save something on it. The easiest way to make savings is by filling our cart and return one or two items that we don’t urgently need. For instance, if you cart in ten packs of noodles, return two and keep the remaining. Repeat this practice whenever you go out shopping. Slowly, expand your habit to other items when shopping for clothing, electronic devices, shoes, and other must-have items. You’ll notice that your piggy bank is getting fatter.
Look to buy coupons and discounts
Shopping can be tricky, but we can save as much as when we use coupons and discounts. Several retailers and clothing sites launch these projects to create awareness for a newly launched product. In some cases, retailers clear old their stock to make space for new ones. Either way, such schemes offer a great opportunity for customers to buy high-quality garments and accessories at very nominal cost. Some online sites like ClothingRIC provide discounts of up to 50% off or more on a select range of clothing brands and accessories. Likewise, customers are also facilitated with schemes like free shipping or coupons on branded clothing. This makes shopping with coupons a great way to make significant savings on our favorite clothing items and accessories.
Keep An Eye On Expiration Dates
Often, we buy things in bulk. This is a good idea to avoid paying more on the same item. But we need to practice caution. Sometimes, we shop for things keeping price hike in mind, but we forget to look at expiration dates. Now, imagine if you bought a three-month stock of meat about to expire a month later? There is no way you could consume that, making you spent more than save. You might also suffer an unnecessary headache all because of a simple mistake. Thus, it is prudent to make a rule about purchasing edible items, “Never buy stocks of something that you cannot consume quickly.” This is guaranteed to help us save from unnecessary headaches.
Dine Out Once A Month
As dining out is indeed pleasurable, it may be costly as well. For the love of eating out, we may still visit our favorite diner or try and discover new places. But it would be prudent if we cut our usual four times in a month date night to once-in-a-month instead. We may also opt to just cook at home and set up flowers and candles if that would please our date.
Creative money saving ideas that actually work
