It’s not you, it’s your thyroid.
Last Saturday turned out pretty productive. This momi enjoyed pampering sessions like nail art, eyebrow threading, hair and makeup, and massage. More than the de-stressing activities, though, an in-depth discussion about thyroid and its complications made this momi more excited. Why? Finally, healthcare professionals provided free medical advice and answers to everyday health concerns.
Dr. Teofilo San Luis, VP of Philippine Thyroid Association, and Dr. Wesley Llauderes, President of the Philippines Society of Nuclear Medicine, both explained the importance of the thyroid gland. They stressed that thyroid plays a great role in one’s overall health and well-being. And often in most cases, thyroid problems are usually left undetected. Mainly because symptoms like tiredness, weight fluctuations, and difficulty in sleeping are usually attributed to poor lifestyle choices. Those with thyroid problems did not think it is not their lifestyle but it is their thyroid. Thus, for this year’s International Thyroid Awareness Week (ITAW) 2017, Merck and partners pushed for the theme “It’s Not You, It’s Your Thyroid.”
Some of the uncertainties given answers were:
- Some patients can experience bloating, constipation and diarrhea. With that in mind, they consult a gastroenterologist only to find out that it’s not their gastrointestinal tract that’s having a problem but their thyroid.
- Some patients feel depressed, anxious, and emotional. They go to a psychiatrist only to realize that it’s not their psychological and emotional state but their thyroid.
- Some would go to an OB-Gyne because of an irregular period, miscarriage or premature delivery. Only, later on, they will learn that it’s their thyroid.
International Thyroid Awareness Week (ITAW) 2017
The symptoms of thyroid disorders can be difficult to spot. This is the very essence of the International Thyroid Awareness Week (ITAW). To remind everyone to be mindful of his thyroid gland and detect disorders if ever. At the end of the program, all attendees pledged to raise awareness of the importance of thyroid health.
Many trooped at the Robinsons Novaliches Trade Hall. Many interested individuals participated in knowing more about thyroid and the importance of this gland. And as an added treat to them, pampering booths were readily available. A short video clip about thyroid, its disorders, and different symptoms came next. Most also appreciated the doctor’s consultation. All attendees had the opportunity to speak with a doctor and get checked for any possible thyroid disorder.
You and your thyroid
The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped gland found in the neck, right under the voice box. It is responsible for producing the master metabolism hormones that control every function in our body. Thyroid disorders are common, and they include goiter, hyperthyroidism, and hypothyroidism. In the Philippines alone, one in every 11 adults suffers thyroid disorders. Poor thyroid function has been linked to serious health conditions like irritable bowel syndrome, acne, gum disease, and infertility. The same situations we sometimes face thus consult to specialists only to find out that again, it is not us but our thyroid.
It is imperative then that each one of us learn how our thyroid works and what can cause it to go off balance. Check Momi Berlin’s Directory now to know how to unmask your thyroid.
