Last Sunday, my son and I met a family whose generosity and modesty are simply impressive. They are a family of artistic talent. And because of their passion for the arts, the members of the family teach art enthusiasts through workshops, on-the-spot painting demonstrations and seminars. They have been in this line for half a century now, and three generations are actively involved in growing and sustaining this art of Chinese brush painting. They are the Chan Lim family.
Chan Lim Family of Artists and Students exhibit
They have an ongoing art exhibit at the SM The Block Atrium in Quezon City. On display are more than 250 paintings meticulously drawn by 43 talented artists – Chan Lim family and their students. Collectively, they call themselves the Chan Lim Family of Artists and Students. This is the family’s 24th time to stage an exhibit at SM. They have done more than 300 exhibits within the Metro and even provinces like Cebu. Of course, they have art shows in China as well. This is their second show for this year, having Cebu as the first, and there are about six more coming.
Arts beyond beauty and passion
At the exhibit are exquisitely hand-painted plates and scrolls mostly about nature. A few are lovely drawings of Chinese women and colorful animals like birds and roosters. As one looks closely, he would instantly observe how the artist painstakingly made each stroke to make the painting appear alive and authentic as possible. This only clearly shows how the Chan Lim family members put much detail into their craft.
The Chan Lim family is one of the few remaining notable Chinese brush painting artists in the Philippines today. Their paintings can be found in private collections in the country and even abroad. Mr. Chan Lim, the family patriarch and is set to celebrate his 80th birthday this year. He focuses on Western art specializing in oil and watercolor. His sons Alex, Felix, Rolex, and Jolex, on the other hand, concentrate on landscapes, flora, and fauna. The third generation of Chan Lims are also very much into Chinese brush painting and continuously nurture their artistic talents.
The Chan Lim Family of Artists and Students art exhibit at SM The Block Atrium will be on display until February 12, 2017. Find time to visit and you, too, will be awed by the passion these artists put into their work.
