MOMI STARTS ANEW| 30 days to a simpler life

Jan 5, 2017 | Life, Only Berlin

I am rereading “30 days to a simpler life” now.  I’m reading it not because I find my life complicated or I make my life complicated.  I just find the title too tempting not to reread.  Plus it is new year and I feel a little energetic to at least simplify my life.  I have read this book years ago and would want to refresh myself of its learnings.

30 days to a simpler life

30 days to a simpler life

The book is a simple day-by-day entry of simplifying life by making simple decisions like, “don’t need it, then don’t buy it.”  Yes, I am so guilty of that.  A classic example of my compulsive shopping —

While waiting for a friend, I tried some clothes at Promod.  And before I left the store, I bought a beautiful black and white dress WHICH wasn’t even —  in the slightest degree — close to my actual dress size.  I bought it in hopes that it will fit me someday.  And I hang that dress inside my closet as a constant reminder that I need to lose some pounds.  The dress, which I bought four Christmases ago, stayed in my closet untouched.  I haven’t dropped a few pounds since then.

So easy to read, the “30 days to a simpler life” is surprisingly very entertaining without being too preachy.  I find myself agreeing with some points and even follow the advice.

The following day, I grabbed a black garbage bag and trashed those paper bills and some unused stuff.  And just before lunch, I amassed two bagfuls of paper bags and some preloved bags.   The preoccupation with finding who might be interested in this stuff is another added job on my part, so I just told the boys to put them outside our gate.  And true enough, just minutes after, someone got them.  To keep paper shopping bags out of landfills is to find new uses for them or again, pass them to those who will find them useful.  Letting go of these items is one step to uncomplicating my life.

Passing on our preloved bags while they are still useful to others.

Passing on our preloved bags while they are still useful to others.

I am on day 4  of my “30 days to a simpler life.”  I still have 26 days to finish the book and by then, I see myself living a rather low-maintenance life with no more overstuffed things around me.

Good luck to me!  Looking forward to a clutter-free and simpler 2017!  How about you? Kindly share your 2017 plans to make daily living simple and uncomplicated.

Wow! Where did you get that book, I want one. Hahahaha… This is very timely because right now I’m in the process of giving away a lot of unused stuff at home. And I like the last part where you said we should give it away when its still in good condition, like those bags in the picture. You just me feel very pumped up to do more organizing, sorting, and giving away and simplifying if not everything at least most. Decluttering is the win! Let’s cheers to that. 🙂

It sounds like a book I need to read! I have the same issue with you. I have two t-shirts so good but I have to lose some weight… Have them for 2 summers now and still nothing! Also I have so many things in my closet and in my home in general that I need to get rid off! And how knows??? Someone may be in desperate need of them!

You may sell them online or give to charity. Surely someone would love those shirts and stuff. I sold that dress online and somebody was just so happy to get a new dress (never been worn, i mean) for so affordable price tag.

I love that book and anything to do with living more intentionally. That really is what simple living means, no? It’s knowing exactly how you want to live your life, because when you know, you plan for it, you don’t leave things to happen by chance. This year, I started simplifying by continuing to purge my belongings (including my kids’) of things we could sell as “preloved”, which isn’t a bad way to make some extra money for things that we actually would need. That, I think, is one way we can all regularly practice intentionality and simplicity in our lives.

It is also what I did to the baby stuff of my 14month old boy. I sold a few of his feeding bottles which we havent used at all because he is breastfed. I also gave to charity a lot of old clothes and bags and shoes. It felt good to be of help and also to earn even for a little amount.

I really need this. I need to get rid of the attachment with the old things. Despite not using them, I love to just store them. That creates clutter and ultimately I end up in a situation where I need to search for the things that I regularly use. For instance my phone’s bluetooth headset, I must have lost atleast 4 in last 6 months and I know most of them are misplaced in the clutter but then I end up buying a new one since I can’t do without it and won’t find time to search it!!!

We often say we dont have time but ive read somewhere and it truly made sense – dont find time. make time for it.

But I feel you. I also have that kind of attachment with things. But as soon as I feel like cleaning and decluttering and throwing things, I immediately follow that mood because it means it is the right time.

Nice book! I like rereading some of my favorite books also. 🙂 One of our practices at least twice a year (usually during Lent and Christmas or New Year) is to purge our things. It’s our way of keeping our lives less cluttered. It’s true that one man’s trash may be another man’s treasure.

That is a nice practice. Perhaps we may do the same so our decluttering isnt just based on our mood. Ehehehe.
