MOMI LEARNS/ Wellness to the ultimate level

Sep 5, 2016 | Love, Only Berlin

Note:  I was challenged to take wellness to the ultimate level.  I gamely accepted the dare.  Are you ready as well?

There goes Manong Ice Cream (Manong is how we usually call male strangers older than us).  I heard the sound of his cute bell.  I went outside and shouted, “Manong!”  He looked for the sound of the voice, saw me then nodded.  He smiled as well.

I returned the smile.  Then remembered Dr. Divina Hey-Gonzales, M.D.  “If morning sun is good for the baby as it provides vitamin D, 12 noon sun is a natural antidepressant which helps relieve mild depression.

I told myself,”perhaps that’s the reason Manong Ice Cream is such a jolly person.  He works long hours on the streets and is often exposed to strong sun.

These and more are the things I learned from the “Taking Wellness to the Next Level” class.  I attended it last Saturday at The Parenting Emporium.

Taking wellness to the ultimate level with some of my favorite mommy blogger friends from left Nilyn, Mhaan and Madz.

Usually, we only remember the word “wellness” when we are not feeling well.  From the fun discussion led by  Dr. Divina, I got to understand and learn the following:

A.  What to eat

Healthy Oils: Virgin Coconut Oil, Ghee, Free range butter, Fish Oil, Krill Oil

Healthy Carbs: Fruits (local fruits in season), whole grain

Healthy Protein: Fish, Free range chicken, Free range beef, lamb, nuts on trees and not under the ground, variety of vegetables

B.  Eat Organic

And organic means food produced without conventional pesticide and synthetic fertilizers

C.  What contribute toxins to the body

  1. pollution in the environment
  2. electronic tools thus it is recommended to remove all electronic tools in the bedroom or detoxify the room through Palmera plants or Himalayan salt cystal lamps
  3. water thus the best water is alkaline water.  Yes, you read it right.  Even the distilled water is not considered healthy as it is dead water.
  4. salt thus the best recommended salt to use is Himalayan Salt

D.  What to do in case of fever

Dr. Divina shared that there are three phases of fever.  The Phase 1 is fever and chills.  Body temperature for that is less than 38.5 degrees centigrade.  We need to wrap with blankets and put hot water bottle on soles of feet and tummy.  A steam bath is also helpful, same with drinking warm water or hot clear soup.

The second phase is the burning hot all over with temperature greater than 38.5 degrees centigrade.  This is the stage wherein one needs a sponge bath, cold compress on the head and hydration.

The trick is to let the body tempetature reach its peak as only when it reaches its peak that it will go down.

E.  Simple home remedies for cold

Onion.  Yes, onion.   We only need to chop onions then add 2 tablespoon of honey.  Leave the solution for a few minues then take the syrup extract.

F.  How to take your own wellness to the ultimate level

  • sleep 6-8 hours
  • eat organic food
  • drink alkaline water
  • regular sun exposure
  • magnesium from the sea
  • Himalayan salt
  • plants inside the house

We went home that afternoon confident.  We know that should we face situations like fever and cold for instance, we now know what to do.  I am ready to take my family’s wellness to the ultimate level.   Are you ready as well?

By the way, another lesson learned that afternoon?  Kids below three years old are not ready yet to eat egg or potatoes.  These two are rich in protein and protein is the hardest to digest.

Yes, that fact  left me dumbfounded. I was really shocked that I can’t even speak for a few seconds.  I regularly give my one-year-old mashed potatoes.  Good thing he hates egg.

Learned so much from this mommy. Who knew you can’t give eggs and potatoes to babies? Those are my son’s favorite. Helpful tip for colds as well.

Yep. This is the same post we were talking about earlier. So… fever. Did you know fever is good too? As long as it is managed. Just like cold, body is reacting and building better immunity. Of course who in his right mind would want to have their cute little adorable ones have illnesses?

Nice post with solid advises, momi.

Wellness is a serious matter especially nowadays when everything seemed to be going “instant” and sort of unhealthy. We should raise our awareness of “wellness” and we should really commit ourselves to stay healthy 🙂 Glad to move closer to work – lesser stress from traffic and yes – 6-8 hours of sleep!

The last part left me dumbfounded. Momi B, even a small amount of egg/mashed potatoes, bawal or is it merely discouraged? What are the effects in case the kid eats a lot of eggs and potatoes?

Oh, I didn’t know that about eggs and potatoes! Doctors (pedias) recommend these as ok for first solid foods of babies once they are over 6 months old. Even our mentor Bo Sanchez recommends that all electronic devices be removed from the bedroom. Sadly, my husband doesn’t want to follow this. 🙁

I love how you emphasize that Manong Ice Cream can be inspiring due to his enthusiasm! Too bad that there is a big number of people who only cares wellness when sickness comes. The food, lifestyle affect on how we treat people. I easily got irritated when I am stressed due to lack of sleeping hours and bad food. Glad you accepted the challenge.

I am all about organic! I love seeing other people share the same passion for wellness. Let me just share my own experiences. My parents purchased a plot of land. I convinced them to turn it into a farm, so we now grow our own crops. I’ve been eating healthy ever since. I’m moving to the big city soon, so I fear that it’ll be hard keeping up this lifestyle. Hope I could keep eating healthy.

The egg and potato trivia is new to me too! It’s great that you are learning with other moms. It just makes learning more fun, and information spread wider. Health can’t ever be perfect, but we can always do our best

Thanks for the remedies for the fever! I don’t usually get sick because maybe I have good immune system. I always check my diet and try to eat organic. (although organic products are pricey compare to regular ones 🙁 ) the world is so busy and fast changing and while I try to cope up, I dont want my health to be compromised.

I love this post. I don’t think I’m anywhere near your level of wellness, in fact I just happily ate an eclair, but I’m certainly working on losing weight, being more fit, loving myself for who I am, and getting more exercise in daily! I really really try to raise my kids with different views of health and food than I grew up with as well.
